Calling All Chefs Who Like To Cause A Stir

The search has begun for a new World Porridge Making Champion, with the call for entries for the 2014 World Porridge Making Championships, which take place in the highland village of Carrbridge on Saturday 5 October.

The competition is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year, and the organisers are planning a whole programme of activities around the competition.

The World Porridge Making Championships attract entries from chefs from restaurants, hotels and bed & breakfast establishments throughout the UK, Europe and further afield, as well as food bloggers and others with an interest in porridge.

 Last year’s competition attracted entries from the USA, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the UK, with the title going to Ben Horsbrugh, an Englishman residing in Germany, whose interest in porridge dates back to when he was a boy and was sparked by a disagreement between TV’s Dr Who and Sarah Jane about making porridge. 

The speciality title, awarded for a dish using oatmeal, went to Californian TV chef, Laurie Gigone, for her Italian Pinhead Torta.

The title of World Porridge Making Champion is awarded to the chef deemed to have made the best traditional porridge using oatmeal, water and salt. As well as the highly coveted title and the ‘Golden Spurtle Challenge Trophy’, the winner receives a cash prize, and two days of PR support.

The competition is organised by Carrbridge Community Council, and sponsored by Hamlyn’s of Scotland, producers of Hamlyns Scottish Oatmeal and Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats.

George McIvor, Chairman of the judging panel said: “This a special year for the World Porridge Making Championships, as it’s our 20th anniversary. The event continues to grow in stature, and we are looking forward to another international competition, celebrating an important part of Scotland’s culinary heritage.”
